AHK-Cu is a copper-binding tripeptide composed of the amino acids alanine, histidine, and lysine. Although it belongs to the same family of copper peptides as the better-known GHK-Cu, AHK-Cu has attracted particular interest for its interaction with hair follicles and dermal papilla cells.
Much of the interest surrounding AHK-Cu comes from examining its effects on the specialized cells located at the base of the hair follicle.
Dermal papilla cells play a major role in regulating follicle development, hair-shaft production, and the normal hair-growth cycle. Laboratory research has shown that AHK-Cu can stimulate the proliferation of these cells and promote elongation of human hair follicles under experimental conditions.
This makes AHK-Cu particularly interesting in research involving:
Although AHK-Cu and GHK-Cu are both copper-binding tripeptides, their profiles are somewhat different.
GHK-Cu has been studied extensively for collagen production, extracellular-matrix remodeling, fibroblast activity, skin regeneration, and tissue repair.
AHK-Cu, by comparison, has drawn particular attention in hair-follicle research, especially for its interaction with dermal papilla cells and its observed ability to promote follicle elongation in laboratory models.
For this reason, AHK-Cu is often of particular interest to researchers studying the biological mechanisms involved in hair growth rather than primarily collagen production or cosmetic skin remodeling.
The dermal papilla acts as an important signaling center within the hair follicle. These cells communicate with surrounding follicular cells and help regulate whether a follicle remains actively growing or transitions through other stages of the hair cycle.
Research involving AHK-Cu has demonstrated increased dermal papilla cell proliferation along with changes in cellular pathways associated with cell survival. These findings have made AHK-Cu an interesting compound for continued investigation into follicular biology and regenerative hair research.
