GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring 3-amino-acid peptide (Glycine, Histidine, Lysine) that binds with copper in the body.
When GHK binds to copper, the resulting GHK-Cu complex naturally takes on its distinctive blue to blue-violet color.
One of the most interesting things about GHK-Cu is that our natural levels decline as we age. Published research reports average GHK levels of roughly 200 ng/mL around age 20, dropping to approximately 80 ng/mL by age 60.
This age-related decline is one reason GHK-Cu has attracted so much attention in longevity, tissue-repair, and healthy-aging research.
SKIN, COLLAGEN + TISSUE REPAIR
GHK-Cu has been studied extensively for its role in collagen and elastin production. two of the main structural components that help give skin its strength, firmness, and elasticity.
Researchers have also explored GHK-Cu in wound-healing models, tissue remodeling, blood-vessel formation, hair-follicle research, and the activity of cells responsible for maintaining and rebuilding connective tissue.
In simple terms, researchers are interested in how GHK-Cu may help activate some of the bodyβs natural repair and rebuilding processes.
GHK-Cu + GENE EXPRESSION
One of the most fascinating areas of GHK research involves gene expression.
Gene expression simply means which genes inside our cells are turned up, turned down, or kept active.
Large-scale laboratory analyses have found that GHK can influence the activity of thousands of human genes. Research has identified effects involving genes connected with tissue repair, inflammation, antioxidant protection, collagen production, and DNA-repair processes.
Researchers have specifically reported increased activity in numerous genes involved in repairing damaged DNA.
This ability to influence so many different cellular pathways is one of the reasons GHK-Cu continues to receive attention in longevity and regenerative research.
WHY THE COPPER MATTERS
Copper is more than what gives GHK-Cu its blue color.
Copper is an important mineral used by enzymes involved in collagen formation, connective tissue, antioxidant protection, and several other cellular processes.
GHK has a strong ability to bind copper and transport it in a form that researchers continue to study for its role in repair and tissue maintenance.
